Smart Snacks, Sweet Treats and Summer Balance

Summer brings sunshine, longer days—and more time spent outdoors with family and friends. Whether you’re headed to the beach, lounging by the pool, or planning a picnic in the park, what you eat (and drink) matters for your physical energy, mental clarity and mood.

At Modern Minds, we believe in wellness that feels attainable, sustainable and joyful. That’s why we’re all about balance: nourishing foods that support your body paired with indulgences that feed your spirit.

The Power of a Balanced Picnic

“I love the focus on healthy,” says Kim Markin, Wellness Navigator at Modern Minds. “But I also love to focus on fun and indulgences. Sprinkling in nostalgic treats and favorite snacks are an important ingredient for enjoying the moment.

Kim encourages a simple equation when planning your summer snacks: start with what fuels you, then add something that simply brings you joy.

What to Pack

A few favorites Kim recommends:

  • Fresh fruit: Watermelon, strawberries, and oranges aren’t just delicious, they’re naturally hydrating. These water-rich foods can help replenish fluids lost to the summer heat.
  • Protein-packed options: Think turkey roll-ups, hummus and veggies, or a handful of nuts. These snacks help keep you satisfied and balanced.
  • Something sweet: Cookies, chocolate, or your favorite nostalgic treat. “It’s all about balance,” says Kim. “Part of that equation is indulging and savoring.”

Don’t Forget to Hydrate

Hot weather means your body needs more fluids than usual. Dehydration can cause fatigue, brain fog, irritability, and even impact your sleep. In addition to sipping water throughout the day, Kim recommends boosting hydration with foods that have high water content—like cucumbers, grapes, or a juicy slice of watermelon.

If plain water gets boring, try infusing it with lemon, mint, or berries for a refreshing twist.

Wellness Without the Rules

The most important part of healthy summer eating? Make it work for you. “It’s your time and your energy,” Kim says. “Put it toward something that makes you feel good and brings you joy. That’s wellness that lasts.”

So, the next time you’re packing up your cooler or beach bag, remember: balance is the goal. A little fruit, a little protein, and something sweet to celebrate the sunshine.
